I have seen it move a far distance, but it stays mostly in same area. Depends on what side is winning. Guess skill/luck shifts in Alliance battles.

Harvest Temple goes back and forth fairly often.
Aside from that, I haven't seen any other towns get taken over.

You have to keep in mind that the AB system is essentially designed to be a long-term stalemate.

I've only seen the swapping of Harvest Temple and Durhiem Archives. I've seen it go to the first map on either side, but not the second map (though a guildie told me that Luxons have pushed into the second Kurzick map, but it didn't stay there long). The problem is the line resets every 3 hours, and not many people play alliance battles, so not much actually happens to the line before it is reset again. They made a change to make the winning team get a 'momentum' bonus, but I haven't seen it do anything at all. Right now, alliance battles are just a fun little diversion from PvE or decent PvP, nothing more.

No one is really winning it. You could say that Kurzicks are, as it's on Etnaren Keys alot more than Grenz Frontier, but the line only ever moves to swap 2 towns, so no one is winning, really.

strange that the designer choose to implement 3 maps that are hardly ever played.

Maybe this could be made more interesting if someone from GuildwarsGuru did some reporting. Like report on the home page things like:
At the end of the day, who controls what towns.
Who are the key members of the alliances.
Who leaves the alliances and who joins in
Maybe publish some trash talk and gossip to

I've actually seen it get far enough for Gyala Hachery to be Kurzick... once. I was shocked.
You wait until you can't buy high-end armor, and see if you still think it doesn't matter if it moves that far.
Of course, I'm Kurzick. I just cheered. ^_^

Maybe some night an alliance can take the upper hand and push it? It will require some hours thou.

Maybe during beta, but since release, mission towns and the main city cannot change hands.

The lines barely shift past the first easily controllable outpost (harvest temple) but after that it takes an aweful long time to push the lines back even further, but at some stages in the past the lines have passed to leviathan pits, as for the kurzick side, never gone further than harvest temple.
Personally I want to see these new battle maps, playing on the same two all the time (E-Keys and S-Beach) can get quite tideous and boring after the achieving the first 10k faction.

The locations that can't change hands are storyline missions and competitive missions

That would be Vasburg Armory, and Kurzicks lose their 15k armor crafters at this state.
Grenz Frontier does pop up rarely from time to time. For the 2 other maps however, unless the faction border system receives another major overhaul, the chance of seeing this and this is basically nil.

I would say that about sums it up. The way it's designed is such that the chances for one side to push all the way into the heart of the other's territory is practically nil.

Yes. There are 5 maps. Two or them are basically never seen.
ANet has tried to make it more likely that those get seen. They added "momentum", which they didn't really explain, but I assume it means it's easier to keep pushing in one direction -- if Luxons are losing, they will probably keep losing, and vice versa.
So maybe ANet will keep pushing this until the edge maps start seeing a LITTLE more play. As it (still) is, it's unheard of.

Rather than have 5 maps with varing degrees of advantage for one side or the other, I'd like to see 3 or 4 neutral maps, and 3 or 4 maps with an advantage for each side. I think this would go along way toward ending some of the staleness in ABs.
